Berlin

German school in Berlin

Our German school in Berlin is in the old Western part of the city, in one of the most beautiful and interesting areas with the most movement: Schöneberg. The great public transport connection makes sure that all routes are just a step away from the language school.

The school is on the main street in Schöneberg, a two minute walk from the metro or from the train station (Schnellbahn). This neighbourhood with its bars, cafes and stylish restaurants have been converted into a lively and exclusive place to go clubbing.

Every weekend, you can go to the Winterfeldtmarkt market, perhaps the most famous in Berlin, as well as Mauerpark market. In the area of the Fuggerstraße street, the homosexual area has been established, which enriches the place with bars and original events. If you want a bit of peace, you can go to the Viktoria-Luise-Platz square or visit the villages and luxurious 19th century constructions of Friedenau, a town to the South of Schöneberg. On Tauentzienstraße, the western extension of the Kurfürstendamm street, the shopping centre Kaufhaus des Westens (KaDeWe) can be found: the biggest in mainland Europe.

Facilities at the school

  • 22 large classrooms with natural light, equipped with TV, projector, DVD and video, computer and whiteboard.
  • An internet cafe with 16 terminals where you can connect to the internet for free
  • A large student room with tables and chairs: a place to chat, drink, eat or work. Here there are shelves with useful books for practicing the language, and the bulletin board with information about the cultural programme of films, walks and excursions.

Strongest Points

  • A multicultural and cosmopolitan capital

  • An interesting history reflected throughout the city

Berlin

Berlin is, without a doubt, one of the most interesting cities in Europe and in the world. After it was destroyed in World War 2, it was the image and symbol of a world divided into two. But this now forms part of the past, in the last 20 years Berlin has changed into a youthful and cosmopolitan city which has a lot to offer to different types of people: lovers of art, nightlife, history or sport. The hustle and bustle of the large city can be combined with the peacefulness of the nature.

Berlin is an easygoing city. Dominated by contrasts, it is a place where nobody is surprised by anything and where there is room for all different trends and ways of thinking. Its diversity can be reflected in its districts, the most alternative in the East, most famous amongst the youth, artists and the most eccentric people. Elegance and peace can be found in the West. Here, nearly four million people live, in the biggest city in Germany. However, it is a city that is also peaceful. This is perhaps because Berlin used to be made up of small villages... welcome to the city where it is impossible to get bored.

Useful information

Interests

  • The etymological meaning of Berlin is "marshland" due to the nature of the land on which the city is built.
  • It is the third most visited city in the European Union
  • Berlin wall, which divided the city between 1961 and 1989, was 45 kilometres long and divided the city into two, and another 115 kilometres which separated the western part of communist Germany. The so called "wall of shame" was 3.6 metres tall.
  • Hitler´s bunker is under a car park. This is so you can pass it without noticing it. There is only a small plaque indicating what it is.
  • One tenth of the population of Berlin are foreign, mainly Turkish, Italian, Polish and Russians.
  • Berlin is considered the European New York. In this city, nearly all the cultures in the world live together in harmony and it is a clear and definite example of multicultural and multiracial tolerance.
  • The nightlife in Berlin has no reason to envy that of New York or London.
  • Berlin attracts artists worldwide, many of them established in the German capital and enrich their dynamic creative proposals and state-of-the-art Berlin art scene.
  • The cost of life can double that of the cost in Spain. But the city is very varied and there are many economical places to go out, drink, shop...
  • In Germany it is almost obligatory to add a 10% tip to every bill. This applies to any bar, cafe or restaurant (not if asked to in a bar).

What to see in Berlin

  • Jewish synagogue: opened in 1866, inspired by the arabic style of the Alhambra in Granada. During Kristallnacht, in November 1938, it was protected against attacks by the Nazis as it was in an area of buildings where the Aryan citizens lived. It was totally destroyed in 1943 and now has been converted into a museum.
  • Hackeschen Höfe: collection of courtyards in Europe and one of the best examples of the Art Deco style.
  • Arsenal of weapons. It is the most important Baroque style building in Berlin
  • Bebelplatz was the scene of burning books on the 10th May 1933 by the Nazis, where they burnt 22,000 books.
  • Reichstag - Parliament:  the visit to the glass dome of Reichstaf is almost mandatory for tourists: who doesn´t want to enjoy the great view and have the opportunity to stroll over the heads of the deputies?
  • The Brandemburg gate: During the division of Berlin in the Cold War, the Brandemburg gate was between the two walls: the so-called "death strip". It is the symbol of division and unification of Germany.
  • Potsdamer Platz: was completely devastated during the second world war and was intended to be "no mans land" and was divided by the Berlin Wall for 28 years.
  • The Tiergarten: the great "green lung" of the centre of Berlin, has an area of 210 hectares. In summer, there are two areas for nudism in the middle of the park.

At night in Berlin

New York has it, Paris has it, and Berlin has it too: a strong nightlife which satisfies all expectations and always follows the path of new trends. Including at the time of the wall, following the example of the "Big Apple" in New York, western Berlin was a city that didn´t sleep. Here, there was no closing time for bars and clubs, which broke the night atmosphere. Quite the contrary: with accredited institutions such as the "Sage club" or the "Kit Kat club", every month new discos, clubs, lounges, and varied style bars were born... The majority of them are in the trendiest neighbourhoods: Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain.

Berlin is also the capital of singles. So the supply of locals and parties is huge to have fun and get to know new interesting people.
