Useful information:

Getting around Cannes:

Cannes is a relatively small city so you can get around quite easily on foot.

What to see in Cannes:

  • Le Suquet: going up the Saint Antoine street you will find the oldest neighbourhood in Cannes and don´t forget the "glamour" of the "Croisette", the aristocratic neighbourhood. The historic centre of the old city is situated high up, the monte Chevalier.
  • The Castre Castle was delcared the national heritage in 1790 and was sold to the council of the village a year later. In 1878, it was transformed into a porcelain shop and later a Museum of Mediterannean and Ancient civilisations, which we now know as the Museum of the Castre. In 1937, the tower and chapel were listed as historical monuments.
  • Meynadier street: situated a few metres from the Croisette, Meynadier street was for a long time the main street and was called "the rue grande", and connected the modern city directly to the Suquet district.
  • La Croisette: This beautiful area of Cannes has 3km of sandy public beaches and others are private, where you can admire the Lerins islands.
  • Of course, you can´t walk around the Croisette and you can´t go through the famous Palace Festivals and Congress (Palais des Festivals et des Congres), recently rennovated, and you feel like stars of the cinema for a moment as you go up the steps, and see the marks left by the hands of many artists that that make Cannes the capital of glamour and fantasy.
  • Vieux Port and Marche de Forville (Old port and Forville market) continues being a picturesque port and you can imagine how it would look in the early twentieth century, before the city was discovered by European nobility.
  • Just above the port, the Marché de Forville (Forville market) can be found, an old Provencal style building which recieves goods from local producers, fruit, vegetables and flowers.
  • Other interesting markets to discover and buy things from in Cannes are the Marche d´Autrefois (market of other times) in place of l´etang, every day from 8:00-18:00, you will definitely be able to find interesting things to get as a souvenir for your holidays in Cannes, for a very small price.
  • Notre-Dame: the oldest parish church in the city, it was constructed in the 16th Century.
  • Musée de la Castre: The Castre museum, situated high up in the old city, in the ruins of the medieval castle of the monks of Lérins, this museum is categorised as a historic monument.
  • Centre d'Art La Malmaison: 47, boulevard of the Croisette. The hotel constructed in 1863 was demolished and was rebuilt in 1950.
  • Espaca Miramar: unmissable walk through these beautiful islands are just a 20 minute boat ride from the Cannes coast, the made up of Santa Margarita island and San Honorato island.
  • In the Margarita island, the famous Man in the iron mask was confined in the 17th Century in the old Royal Fort. Constructed in the same century, the Sea Museum can be found, which shows the history of the fort and shipwrecks that occurred in the vicinity of the islands.
  • In the San Honorato island, smaller but more luxurious, the Cisterian Monastery can be found, set up on the island since the 5th Century.
  • You can travel to the islands from the pier Iles de Cannes. 11€ there and back to the Margarita island and 12€ there and back to San Honorato island.
  • Sea museum: This museum is in the oldest part of the Fuerte Real, and is a historic monument.
  • Exploring the Riviera is feasible because Nice is 30km away, Antibes only 15km, and Grasse, famous for its perfume, less than 20km away. All of the cities can be visited in a day.
