The city of Galway

Galway, founded in the thirteenth century, is a quiet little town that retains the charm of the Middle Ages. It is set in the not too distant privileged strategic area of the famous Cliffs of Moher.
In Galway you can discover sumptuous castles, carved stone streets with a curious mixture of styles, new buildings and waterways; all of this gives the city an unusual harmony.

It is a young, dynamic and university city. Many of its 70,000 residents are students from one of the two universities.
Galway has all the amenities of a modern city, yet is quiet, safe and has a friendly environment. Its casual atmosphere, festivals, pubs, traditional Irish music and the generous hospitality of its inhabitants makes the city a popular destination.

Moving around the city

Galway is a small medieval town. The easiest way to get around in the city is on foot.

  • Bus: Bus Eireann connects various parts of the city of Galway. There are several types of bus tickets for students. Daily tickets, round-trip or weekly. If you present your student card, you can benefit from discounted ticket prices. Price: Normal ticket: € 1.20; Weekly € 12; Monthly € 42
  • Bicycle: students often move around by bike that they buy, second hand, from other students who have completed their studies and leave the country. They can also be rented for a small fee.

Interests

  • It is the commercial and cultural capital of the west coast of Ireland. The main economic drivers are the universities in Galway, tourism and industry
  • Galway has 13,000 students that contribute greatly to the youthful feeling of the city.
  • It is known as "the bilingual capital of Ireland" - Although most of the population speak English, you can still hear people speaking Irish Gaelic
  • For many centuries it was the common destination of the Spanish galleons travelling to the port to trade with the Irish; The Scottish traveler Robert Graham wrote, "everything in this town has an air of Spain".
  • The base population is just over 70,000 inhabitants, but during the spring and summer this increases due to the many visitors for various music festivals, the International Festival of Literature, the Galway Arts Festival (the largest in Ireland) Oyster Festival and Galway Races.

What to see in Galway

  • Galway City Museum: Exhibit artifacts related to the fishing industry. Galway's medieval heritage is also represented in the medieval section
  • Galway Cathedral: One of the largest and most impressive buildings in the city. The cathedral reflects different architectural influences
  • Lynch's Castle: one of the finest surviving castles in Ireland.
  • Galway Arts Centre many years ago this building was the offices of the city government. It is now an arts center, which offers an excellent programme of concerts, lectures, and exhibitions of Irish and international artists
  • Cruise on the River Corrib: 90 minute trips by boat gives us the pleasure of travelling through the river Corrib and Galway, and getting to know Inchagoill Island or Cong in County Mayo.
  • The Spanish Arch: This arch is located on the banks of the River Corrib
  • Galway Panoramic offers us a panoramic view of Galway.
  • Cregg Castle: It was built in 1648 and is the last fortified castle.

And at night?

At night, the streets of Galway are filled with young people and Irish music, one of the great pleasures of visiting this city.
Among the most famous music pubs are: The Quays, (for impromptu performances of Irish music), The Front Door, and Busker Browne's "The Skeff". You can also find traditional Irish music in Taaffe's, Taylor's and Tigh Neachtain. The latter is housed in the former home of a local politician. It has a gazebo and a medieval fireplace.
In pubs and bars in Galway, all musical tastes are met, but there are many that simply enjoy the tranquility of a drink. If you are looking for a truly local beer, try a Galway Hooker.
