Study English in Chichester

Chichester is a small city located in the South of England, it has a big history with a Roman past, and an importance in the Anglosaxon era. This place has some of the oldest Churches and buildings in Great Britain.

Chichester is the centre of communications and culture in the region, with a theatre festival and two art galleries. The nearby port of Chichester, together with the Southern plains and the walls of the city offer the opportunity to carry out activities outside. This place is ideal for settling in as there are many ancient roads that converge here. The oldest part of the city can be found within the walls, which were constructed on Roman foundations.

The city nowadays has made use of its past and has made a large tourist industry out of it. In the area, they have constructed various ports together with other related industries, and the famous shipyard North Shore is located in Chichester.

What to visit in Chichester

  • Chichester Cathedral: Founded in the 11th century, is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, and has the chapel of St Richard of Chichester. Its tower, constructed with a quite weak local stone, suddenly collapsed and was reconstructed in the 19th century.
  • As well as the Cathedral, there are 5 temples belonging to the Church of England, the Roman Catholic Church and nine religious buildings of other denominations.
  • The rest of the Roman amphitheatre is now buried underground south of The Hornet, used as a park.
  • The Butter market in North Street was designed by the famous John Nash, and was opened in 1808 as a market for food and agriculture products.
  • The "Corn Exchange" in East Street was constructed in 1833, being one of the first constructed in the country. This building is breathtaking and was designed to show the importance of trade in the era.
  • Chichester Cross, is a very typical building in the old market, and was constructed in 1501 and is situated in the intersection of the four main roads in the city.
